how do i check the codes for my engine from home?

i have a 00 altima, with race headers so my check engine light stays on, but its been running a little off… and i work to much to take it to a shop…. how can i do it my self to see if things are ok? and what are the codes?

You cannot do it yourself unless you want to spend 3000$for a scanner.

below is a great site for checking obd II codes which is what your vehicle has. you can buy a scanner at your nearest wally world, parts house or online they are relatively inexpensive. If you can operate a microwave you can pull and read your codes.
